Homemade Hand Dishwashing Detergent

Make dishwashing soap at home yourself

Making your own hand dishwashing detergent saves you money and time. You might be allergic to a certain type of dishwashing soap and making your own soap will ensure you can choose soap ingredients that are not harmful to your skin. It's also a fun activity for the whole family.

Instructions

Homemade Octagon Soap Mixture

1. Fill your medium pot with 4.5 to 5 quarts of water and place on the burner on the stove.

2. Add two cups of shredded Octagon Soap Bars to your medium pot. Octagon Soap Bars are a plain white bar of soap made by Colgate.

3. Turn up the heat to medium-high or high to melt the shredded soap bars. When the soap is done melting, turn the stove off.

4. Add 1 cup of baking soda, 1/4 cup of washing soda and 1/4 cup of lemon juice to the pot.

5. Stir the ingredients and let cool. Once cooled, you can pour into containers and seal.

Homemade Soap Flakes and Glycerin Soap Mixture

6. Pour 1/4 cup soap flakes and two cups of hot water into a large bowl. Stir until the soap flakes are dissolved. Cool to lukewarm.

7. Pour a 1/4 cup of glycerin into the soap flake mixture and stir. Stir in the 1/4 cup of essential oil as well. Allow to cool. As the soap flake and glycerin mixture cools, it will form a soap gel.

8. Stir the soap gel with a fork to break it up. Pour the soap gel into a bottle that has a tapered neck. Such bottles are shampoo containers or soap containers.

9. Squirt three tablespoons into hot, running water to use the soap flakes and glycerin soap mixture.

Homemade Dishwashing Gel Mixture

10. Place a chopping mat on the counter. Grate the 1/2 pound plain white bar of soap into flakes.

11. Pour 1/2 gallon of water into a large pot. Fold the chopping mat so you can easily pour the grated soap flakes into a larger pot. Turn the heat up to medium-high to high and stir the soap flakes to dissolve them.

12. Pour the soap mixture into a glass mason jar once all the soap is dissolved. Allow the soap mixture to cool without a lid. Once cooled, the soap will have a gel like consistency.

13. Pour soap mixture into a soap container, filling the container 1/4 the way full.

14. Fill the remainder of the bottle with hot water and shake to use.
