Replace The Water Intake Assembly On A Toilet

Replace the water intake assembly on your toilet if it leaks.

The water intake assembly, also known as a fill valve, is the part of your toilet connected to your home's water supply. After you flush the toilet, the water exits the tank and into the bowl. This is where the water intake assembly comes in. When the water exits, a float valve in the tank connected to the water intake assembly lowers, which opens up the intake valve. As the float rises, it closes off the intake valve. A malfunctioning water intake assembly on a toilet can cause your toilet to stop flushing properly, so it should be replaced as soon as possible.

Instructions

1. Shut off the water supply for the toilet. These valves are usually located on the wall behind the toilet. Rotate the knobs clockwise to turn off the water.

2. Remove the toilet tank lid and flush the toilet. You may have to do this a couple of times to remove all the water. Soak up any excess left in the tank with the sponge and towels.

3. Unscrew the water supply hose from the inlet with the pair of pliers.

4. Remove the float ball from the intake assembly on the inside of the tank, if you have an older water intake assembly model. Unscrew the screws that attach the float ball and lever to the water intake assembly and lift out.

5. Use the pliers or an adjustable wrench to loosen the lock nut holding the water intake assembly in place on the underside of the tank. This is located just above where you detached the water supply valve.

6. Lift the intake assembly up and out of the tank.

7. Replace the old intake assembly with a new one. Try to get one that has the float ball and lever integrated into the entire assembly, as these are much more durable and less prone to breaking down under the damp and humid conditions inside the tank. Insert the assembly into the tank so that the threads at the end poke out through the bottom of the tank. Make sure the washer on the bottom sits securely on the bottom of the tank for a proper seal. Hold this in place.

8. Screw on the lock nut on the underside of tank to the threads on the water intake assembly.

9. Wrap the inlet threads on the water tank assembly with plumber's tape.

10. Reattach the water supply hose. Tighten the coupling with the pliers.

11. Turn on the water by rotating the valves counterclockwise. Allow the tank to fill. Flush the toilet and check for proper operation. Tighten any couplings as needed.
