Troubleshoot Problems With A Ge 4900 Dishwasher

The GE 4900 dishwasher has a set of fold-down tines on the upper rack.

The GE dishwasher 4900 Series comes with a lot of great features. It can hold up to 16 place settings at once and can easily wash tall or oversized items. It also has a two-, four- or eight-hour delayed start system. Despite all of its unique features, however, you may still run into problems you don't know solve. Attempt to troubleshoot the issues on your own before calling customer service or spending money on a technician.

Instructions

1. Make sure you are using the correct detergent for your dishwasher if you notice excess suds in the tub. GE recommends that you use only Cascade, Cascade Complete or Electrasol Automatic Dishwashing Detergents. To get rid of the suds, open your unit and allow the suds to evaporate. Once they are gone, pour one gallon of cold water into the tub and close and latch the machine. Press the Start/Reset button to pump out the water. Immediately press the button again to stop it. Repeat this process until the water is gone.

2. Verify that your kitchen sink is draining properly if water will not pump out of your dishwasher's tub. You may need to hire a plumber if you cannot unclog your sink. If you have an air gap, clean it. This may be the cause of the drain clogging. Run the garbage disposer, if you have one, to see if you can clear the drain.

3. Use the rinse only cycle if you are adding dishes with tomato-based foods on them to decrease the chance of the tomato staining the inside of the tub. If the tub is already stained, GE recommends you use Cascade Power Booster to assist in removing the stains. Some stains in the dishwasher can be caused by the detergent you are using, as they may contain pigment or dyes. See if the detergent cup has signs of discoloration. If so, switch your detergent to one without colorant.

4. Ensure that the inlet water temperature is correct if your dishes and flatware are not getting clean. Your owner's manual (see references) will have instructions on the proper temperature. Your water temperature may also be temporarily low. You can test this by turning on the faucet and observing whether the water is flowing more slowly than usual. Wait until the water pressure returns to normal before using your dishwasher again. Cleaning the air gap may also help with cleaning. Verify that no large dishes are blocking the detergent dispenser or the wash arms.

5. Raise the water temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit if the sanitized light does not illuminate at the end of the anti-bacterial cycle. If this does not solve your problem, perhaps your door was opened mid-cycle, interrupting the wash portion. Make sure to never stop the cycle at anytime during or after the main wash.
