Repair A Drain Hose

A clogged drain hose is a problem that can be fixed without a technician.

Drain hoses are found in many home appliances; however, the two most common appliances that utilize them are your washing machine and dishwasher. The drain hose is used to eliminate dirty water from the system, leaving either the clothing or the dishes clean. Drain hoses rarely get holes in them, but it does happen. The main cause for a drain hose to act up is a clog. Repairing your drain hose does not require the help of a repairman.

Instructions

Washing Machine

1. Unplug the washing machine and push it away from the wall in your laundry room. Turn the water supply hose spigots to the right to turn the water off. Use a pair of channel locks to remove the supply hoses from the back of the washer.

2. Remove the screws holding the back panel to the unit. This will give you access to the inside components.

3. Locate the drain hose. It will be attached to the bottom of the washer’s basket. Use a pair of pliers to remove the clamp holding the drain hose to the bottom of the washer.

4. Pull the drain hose from the washer and remove any clogs by using a straightened clothes hanger to push the clogs out. Take the drain hose to your kitchen sink or to a garden hose. Run water through the drain hose to locate any holes in it.

5. Use a hot glue gun to seal the holes in the drain hose. When it cools, the glue will be water resistant and keep any cracks in the hose from spreading. Duct tape will also work, but it's not as effective as hot glue.

6. Replace the drain hose and the back panel on the unit. Move the washing machine back inside and reconnect the power supply and the water supply hoses. Test the unit and make sure the drain hose is working properly.

Dishwasher

7. Go under the sink next to your dishwasher and unplug the power supply from the wall outlet. Go to the kickplate of the dishwasher and remove the screws holding it in place. You may have to open the dishwasher door to gain access to the screws.

8. Remove the kickplate from the unit and locate the drain hose and the recirculation hose. The drain hose will be connected to the dishwasher and the sink. The recirculation hose will be attached to both sides of the dishwasher.

9. Place a bucket or a pan underneath the drain hose to catch water that spills out. Remove the clamp holding the hoses onto the unit.

10. Run water through the hoses and use a straightened clothes hanger to remove any clogs in the drain hose or recirculation hose. Replace the hoses.

11. Put the kickplate back on the unit and put the screws holding it on back in. Plug the dishwasher back into the wall and test it to make sure it is draining.
