Fix Rusted Dishwasher Trays

When rust attacks your dishwasher racks, it is usually because an errant knife or other sharp object has nicked the rubber coating and exposed the metal rack to the moist environment of the dishwasher. Since replacement racks can cost upwards of 100 dollars, you probably would prefer to fix the problem rather than replace the rack. However, if you do not completely eliminate the rust before you cover it up, you will eventually find yourself with a rack that has been eaten completely away from the inside.

Instructions

1. Clean the dishwasher rack. Many areas that appear to be rust may in fact be caked-on food. Wash the rack using mild detergent and a cleaning rag to remove any dirt and leftover food. As you clean, take note of any rusty spots. Some rust may flake off when you are cleaning. This is perfectly fine and normal, but you should not assume that this means that you do not have to complete the fix.

2. Remove the rust. Use the sandpaper and the steel-wool pad to scrub off the rust. Make sure all of it is completely gone, since even a tiny bit can work underneath the rubber coating of the rack to ultimately eat right through the metal. It is okay if you sand or rub away part of the plastic. You will be able to replace it shortly.

3. Wipe down the rack again. This will ensure that no rust flakes are left in the area.

4. Brush on the rubberized vinyl coating. It will come with a brush, much like a jar of rubber cement. Brush on a layer, and then wait about 10 minutes while that layer sets. Keep adding layers until you have a coating as thick as the original coating. Some brands are not particularly viscous, so do not be surprised if you need 10 to 15 coats in some cases. The coating should set for at least 24 hours before you use your dishwasher.
