Homemade Liquid Dishwasher Detergent

Homemade Liquid Dishwasher Detergent

Eco-friendly liquid dishwasher detergents are often expensive. For eco-friendly consumers, homemade liquid dishwasher detergents that really work are a possibility. Not only is homemade liquid dishwasher detergent eco-friendly, it is budget friendly. Use different essential oil fragrances to customize this frugal, green cleaning product.

The Process

Gather all materials in one place for easy access. Thoroughly mix 1 cup baking soda, 1cup borax and 1 cup of warm water together in a clean, glass bowl. Add 1 drop of essential oil for every 1 cup of liquid dishwashing detergent. Use whatever essential oil fragrance you prefer. Adjust the recipe as desired, keeping in mind that equal ratios of warm water, baking soda and borax are called for and that 1 drop of essential oil is required for every cup of detergent. For convenience, mix the homemade liquid dish detergent in a clean glass jar. Add the ingredients, put the lid on the jar and vigorously shake the jar until all ingredients are thoroughly mixed. The liquid will have a cloudy appearance. Store the detergent in the same jar. Transfer and store detergent mixed in a bowl into an airtight container. Use 2 to 3 tablespoons of homemade liquid dishwasher detergent per load of dishes. Some settling of ingredients may occur. Shake or stir the liquid dishwasher detergent before each use.

Considerations

A common drawback to using homemade dishwashing detergent is the tendency for the detergent to leave a white film or spots on dishes. Adding vinegar to the rinse cycle or cutting back on the amount of detergent used remedies this problem. If an oily residue remains on dishes, the detergent contains too much essential oil. To remedy this, double the amount of existing detergent. To accomplish this, add an equal ratio of baking soda, borax and warm water to the existing liquid detergent.
