Rotten Shrimp Odor Removal

The odor of rotten shrimp can leave an area smelling unclean, unsanitized and unpleasant. The fishy smell can be potent and overpowering, making a person want to avoid an area completely. These foul odors can sometimes be difficult to get rid of, but by using a few inexpensive deodorizing ingredients, you can get rid of a rotten shrimp odor quickly and effectively.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is one of the best deodorizing products on the market, not to mention one of the cheapest. First, clean the area with dish detergent and warm water to remove any odor that has not set into the surface. Then sprinkle with a coating of baking soda and let sit for 30 minutes. Add a few drops of lemon juice to the baking soda and scrub with a cloth or sponge. The baking soda will absorb and deodorize, while the lemon juice will work as a scented, citrus-based cleaning agent. After cleaning the area with the baking soda mixture, wipe with a damp cloth to absorb any excess solution.

Vinegar

Vinegar works to clean, disinfect and deodorize--perfect for strong odors like rotten shrimp. In a spray bottle, mix a solution of one cup water and one cup white vinegar. Wash the surface with soap and water first, then spray with the vinegar solution. Let sit for ten minutes, then wipe clean with a damp cloth. Repeat as necessary until the foul odor has diminished.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Hydrogen peroxide works as an oxygenated cleaning agent that will quickly clean and deodorize an area affected by a shrimp odor. In a spray bottle, mix a solution of one cup water, 1/2 cup hydrogen peroxide. Wash the surface, then spray with the peroxide solution. Let sit for ten minutes and wipe away with a damp cloth.

Coffee Grounds

To deodorize a confined area like a refrigerator or freezer, simply sprinkle one or two cups of coffee grounds into a dish or pan and set inside the fridge or freezer, uncovered. The coffee scent will eat up the smell of the rotten shrimp. Your refrigerator may smell like coffee grounds for a day or two, but the scent will go away, and the rotten shrimp smell will be gone as well.
