Job Duties


Besides washing dishes, a restaurant dishwasher has to clear plates and ensure food scraps and paper debris end up in the correct receptacles. He stacks clean dishes and cooking vessels in an orderly fashion and correctly stores silverware and cooking utensils. His job description frequently includes other cleaning jobs like sweeping and mopping floors, wiping down counters and maintaining walk-in freezers and refrigerators. Dishwashers commonly help other kitchen workers perform various tasks such as serving and clearing tables.


Work Conditions


Depending on the age, condition and type of restaurant, a restaurant dishwasher’s job environment can be hot, cramped and filled with substandard equipment or be an expansive, well-ventilated room with state-of-the-art dishwashers and sanitation equipment. A dishwasher is on her feet for the duration of her shift, which is usually eight hours long and variable depending on the restaurant’s customer flow. Required attire is casual, clean and comfortable.


Educational Requirements


There are typically no educational requirements for this position. The majority of dishwashers receive on-the-job training while working as a kitchen helper. Past experience in commercial kitchen maintenance or food preparation is preferred. Some states require testing dishwashers for communicable diseases before they are hired.
