J.D. Power and Associates
This marketing services firm questioned consumers who purchased washing machines during the two years leading up to its survey. The study asked these individuals to rate their experiences with the appliances in several areas, including performance and reliability. The firm's 2010 Laundry Appliance Satisfaction Survey shows consumers consider Samsung and Electrolux "among the best" models for performance and reliability. Brands ranking "better than most" include Maytag Epic, LG, Kenmore Elite and Bosch.

Good Housekeeping
This publication's research institute tested the performance of steam washers. Its criteria for evaluation included water use, cleaning ability and fabric handling.
