Cast iron pots
, pans and cauldrons have been cooking food since ancient times. Cast iron cookware dates to the fifth century B.C. but didn't become popular until the 1700s, according to "A Short History of Cast Iron Cookware" on The Rusty Pot website (http://www.therustypot.com). Cast iron pots probably have been leaving rusty stains behind for just as long. Removing sink stains left by a cast iron pot or pan can be a challenge for even the most dedicated homemaker, but with a little elbow grease and modern cleaning detergents, it is possible.
Instructions
Removing Iron Rust Stains
1. Wet the sink with tapwater.
2. Sprinkle powdered dishwasher detergent onto stains, creating a paste, then stir it around with a scrub brush or old, clean toothbrush. You may need to add a little water while mixing the paste.
3. Pat the paste over the stains with your hand, covering the stain and sink surface so all you see is the paste of detergent. Allow the paste to sit overnight, or about 12 hours.
4. Wet a Magic Eraser and scrub, in a circular motion, the dried paste over the sink stain. Add a little water if the sponge isn't wet enough to moisten the paste for scrubbing.
5. Add more detergent and scrub again with the Magic Eraser if the stain persists. If the stain is really stubborn, proceed to the next section.
Persistent Stains
6. Boil water. Fill the sink with enough boiling water to cover the stain.
7. Pour ½ cup powdered dishwasher detergent into the water and allow to soak overnight.
8. Drain the sink and scrub again with the Magic Eraser.
