Decalcify A Krups Espresso Machine

Krups makes around a dozen different kinds of espresso machines. It's a popular brand because their machines are stylish and easy to use. Some machines come with water filters to prevent calcification, but if your model doesn't have a filter or if the water in your area is very hard, you will have to de-calcify your machine every couple of months to keep it in optimum working order.

When to De-calcify

If your espresso maker comes with a water filter, check the indicator regularly to see if the filter needs to be changed. Filtering not only extends the life of the espresso machine and its parts, it makes the coffee taste better by removing chlorine and minerals that affect flavor. For a machine without a filter or for very hard water, you should de-calcify your machine every 2 months or every 50 uses, whichever is first.

De-calcifying Solutions

Krups makes its own de-calcifying solution that is often sold with the machines. This solution is a powdered acid that is mixed with 500 milliliters (about 2 cups) of water and run through the machine. Individual parts can be removed and soaked in the solution as well. Be careful not to spill or dribble the de-scaling solution because it can irritate skin or take the finish off some types of countertops, such as marble. You can buy replacement de-calcifying tablets online or where Krups machines are sold, or you can use white vinegar if the tablets aren't available. Do not use other commercial de-scaling products because they may void Krup's warranty and damage the machine.

De-calcify the Espresso Machine

To de-calcify the espresso machine, dissolve the powder in lukewarm water. Remove the water filter if there is one and remove the grid from the top of the machine. The grid may need to be soaked in the solution separately if it has heavy lime scale. Pour the de-calcifying solution or 2 cups of vinegar into the water tank and turn on the machine. Place a container under the brewing head. When the start/stop button begins to glow, press the steam/hot water button twice and let all of the liquid run through, then press it again to stop it. Turn off the machine and let it cool off for 15 minutes. Run a full tank of water through the machine two times to rinse it. If your machine has a cappuccino attachment or is a combination coffee/espresso maker, you will have to run the solution through each of the dispenser heads to clean them. Check the manufacturer's instructions for do this, as the process varies by machine type.
