Install A 30 Amp Electrical Outlet

In today's homes, 30 amp circuit breakers are often required to power certain appliances, be it a high-powered dishwasher, an electric heater or any one of a hundred other devices. The problem is; not many homes are equipped with 30 amp circuits. Here is install a 30 amp electrical outlet if you need it for a required application.


Instructions


Installing the In-Room Circuit


1. Hold the old-work box up to the wall at the location you are planning on installing the 30 amp outlet. Trace the box and then cut away the drywall.


2. Run the cable from the electrical panel to the location you will be installing the 30 amp outlet. Do not make any connections at the panel until the outlet installation is finalized.


3. Insert the cable into the old-work receptacle box and secure the box inside the wall.


4. Strip away the outer sheathing on the cable to reveal the individual wires. Remove any paper insulation as well.


5. Use the wire strippers to strip away about 3/4" of insulation from the end of each wire.


6. Connect the wires to the terminals on the 30 amp outlet. If the outlet is rated for 240 volts, you will have to connect the black and red lines to the bronze-colored terminals. If it requires a neutral, the white wire will be connected to the silver-colored terminal. If the outlet is a 120 volt, 30 amp model, then only the black, white and ground wires get connected to their appropriate terminals.


7. Secure the wires in their terminals, screw the outlet to the wall box and install the cover plate.


Making the Connections at the Panel


8. Remove the electrical panel's cover and locate a spot for your 30 amp breaker (double pole breakers require two slots).


9. Remove a knockout that gives you easier access to where the breaker will be located. A knockout is a pre-formed access hole along the top or bottom of the electrical panel that needs to be removed in order for the circuit to be installed.


10. Remove the locknut from the Romex connector and loosen the clamp screws. Then, insert the threaded end of the connector through the knockout hole and secure it in place with the locknut. Position the connector so the clamp screws are facing you so it will be easier to tighten them down.


11. Turn the 30 amp breaker off before you install it. Install it as instructed by the manufacturer of your panel.


12. Slide the cable through the Romex connector and tighten the clamp screws to hold it securely.


13. Strip the outer sheathing away to reveal the individual wires and remove all of the paper insulation. Strip about 3/4" of insulation from the ends of each wire.


14. Connect the ground wire to the grounding block inside the electrical panel. Connect the white wire to the neutral bar inside the panel. Connect the black wire to the breaker's terminal (for a single-pole circuit) or both the black and the red (if it is a double-pole circuit).


15. Carefully tuck the wires back into the panel, trying to keep everything as neat as possible.


16. Replace the panel cover and turn the breaker back on.


17.Test your 30 amp outlet for power, you should read between 114 and 120 volts if it is a single pole and between 205 and 240 for a double pole circuit.
