Garden Insecticide Hot Sauce & Dishwashing Liquid

Combining hot sauce, water and soaps or detergents creates a natural insecticide useful against several species of bug pests, according to the website Earth Easy. Gardeners make the mixture using either prepared hot sauces or with hot peppers grown in the garden, which allows the gardener to produce her own bug sprays to be more self sufficient.

Basic Recipe

Add 2 tbsp. of hot sauce to 1 qt. of water. Also add a few drops of liquid soap, and allow the mixture to age at least 12 hours. Shake or stir the mixture before pouring into a spray bottle, and frequently shake the spray bottle while using it to keep the concoction mixed.

Pepper Spray

Mix five or six cloves of garlic with 1 tbsp. of pepper and a chopped onion in 1 gallon of water, according to the Capital District Community Gardens website. Blend this mixture before adding 1 tsp. of soap. Allow the mixture to age for about 48 hours, and spray the mixture on plants. Repeat the application every few days or after any rain.

Cautions

Pepper or hot sauce sprays don't discriminate when it comes to killing and repelling bugs. The sprays kill beneficial insects as well as the bugs doing damage. Earth Easy recommends only spraying plants infected with harmful insects. Wear protective gear, especially eye protection, when applying the sprays.

Effectiveness

Gardeners consider hot sauce and pepper sprays effective against garden mites, caterpillars, worms and beetles. As an added benefit, the hot taste of the spray repels nibbling squirrels and rabbits from the garden. Thoroughly rinse garden produce before use.
