Many people are looking for ways to make a paycheck stretch a bit further. One way to do this is to bypass store-bought cleaning products and learn make your own at home. Not only may this save money, but in many cases it can be better for the environment. Make your own automatic-dishwasher detergent, and clean your dishes for less money.
Basic
This simple recipe makes a basic detergent that is safe for your dishwasher and the environment, as well as safe for those who have allergies to chemical ingredients or fragrance. Borax and baking soda can be purchased inexpensively at your local grocery store. To make the detergent, simply combine equal portions of borax and baking soda, and store it in a covered container. Shake well before use---making sure the lid is on tightly---and use 2 tbsp. in each load of dishes.
Sparkling
Place 1/2 cup borax, 1/2 cup washing soda, 1/4 cup citric acid and 1/4 cup kosher salt in a lidded storage container. Shake well to combine. Use 1 rounded tbsp. of this detergent per load of dishes. The ingredients for this detergent can be purchased in your grocery store. If you have trouble finding citric acid, try substituting 2 packages of sugar-free Kool-Aid lemonade mix; do not use any other flavor or it may dye your dishwasher wild colors.
Liquid
This liquid form of automatic-dishwasher detergent is made of natural ingredients that are eco-friendly and will not add chemical residue to your dishes. Combine 2 1/2 cups liquid castile soap, 20 drops lime juice, 10 drops sweet orange oil and 5 drops lemon juice. Pour the ingredients into a squirt bottle and shake to combine. Shake well before each use. Use 2 tbsp. for each load of dishes.
