My Dishwasher Leaks At The Start Of The Cycle

Dishwashers clean cutlery for mealtimes.

Dishwasher leaks can cause major interference to the harmonious running of a household. They not only lead to significant backlogs of dirty dishes but also cause moisture damage to flooring if not stopped. Dishwasher leaks can occur at any point during a cycle but are common at the start when the machine fills with water. Many problems with dishwasher leaks can be addressed without professional help.

Tub Seal Leaks

Leaks from the dishwasher tub seal can occur in machines with vertically mounted motors, which are often at the base of the dishwasher beneath the drain impeller. The purpose of the tub seal is to restrict water from seeping out and reaching the motor. Remove the seal by removing the lower rack of the dishwasher and the spray arm. The spray arm support and the wash/drain impellers should also be taken out to access the tub seal. The seal can now be removed from its casing and replaced. Broken tub seals in horizontally mounted dishwashers are more problematic as the whole motor and pump assembly must be replaced.

Seal or Door Gasket

Door gaskets are rubber seals that fit around dishwasher doors to prevent water from leaking out during wash cycles. Gaskets can harden and become weaker over time, causing the sealing mechanism to function less effectively. Examine the dishwasher seal for signs of hardening or tearing and replace if necessary. Door seals often cannot be repaired.

Water Inlet Valve

Dishwasher leaks often occur at the beginning of a cycle from the water inlet valve. It is unlikely the water inlet valve itself is damaged, even though the water emerges from this point. The rubber tube that connects to the valve and the line that connects to your house's water supply are much more likely to be at fault. These fittings should be tightened to prevent further leaks and replaced if necessary.

Hoses

Dishwasher hoses have hot water running through them during a normal wash cycle. The hoses are behind the lower access panel on many dishwashers, which can be removed by hand or using a screwdriver. Fitting a replacement clamp for a hose can sometimes cure leaking problems. The hoses should be replaced if a clamp fails to remedy the problem.
