Standard Dimensions Of Kitchen Appliances

Selecting appropriate appliances and proportions will help complete a kitchen remodel.

Appliance selection is an important part of a well-done kitchen remodel and is an area where bad choices may be costly. Prior to making any selections, become familiar with the size and shape of the room and keep proportion in mind. Small spaces won't do well with large appliances and vice versa. Keeping pieces size-appropriate will be aesthetically pleasing and will make sure all the pieces come together correctly. To accomplish this necessity, most manufacturers will provide standard size pieces as well as smaller and larger options.

Dishwashers

Modern dishwashers feature a host of additions their older counterparts didn't have. Among these improvements are quieter, more powerful cleaning, high energy efficiency and less water consumption. Most frequently used styles are freestanding, which require no support from a counter top, or the integrated style, which must be situated between two supporting structures and under a counter top. Either option will be approximately 24 to 30 in. wide, 25 in. deep and 34 in. tall. Compact options, ideal for use in RV's or an apartment, are available with a width as narrow as 18 in., 22 1/2 in. deep and 32 1/2 in. tall.

Ranges

Modern-day ranges have also undergone improvement in recent years. Homeowners may choose from gas or electric. Gas is used most popular with chefs, as it offers a quicker response than electric, and models are now outfitted with easier to clean surfaces, higher energy efficiency and a diverse selection of colors and finishes. The average width of a gas or electric range is approximately 30 in. Smaller options may be found with a width as small as 20 in. wide and as large as 40 in. wide. Heights and depths will vary greatly depending on the manufacturer.

Refrigerators

The average size of a refrigerator is going to depend largely on the chosen style. There are three basic styles: the side-by-side, which has the refrigerator and freezer next to each other, a top freezer or a bottom freezer. Because of this variety, there isn't one standard size for a refrigerator, a fact that may make it easier to find one that is ideal for your space. Side-by-side models come standard at 32 in. wide and 66 in. in height. Bottom freezer styles are approximately 30 in. wide and 66 to 67 in. high and a tip freezer measures in at about 28 in. wide and 61 1/2 in. tall.

Cabinets

Though cabinets are not considered an appliance, their size is an essential part of kitchen design and in selecting the proper appliances. Standard sized cabinets are premade, widely available and fairly inexpensive. Customized cabinets offer a wider selection of color and style than standard cabinets, but are significantly more expensive. Standard cabinets include base and overhead options, pieces that are mixed and matched to fit specific spacing or design needs. Base cabinets are 34 1/2 in. tall, 24 in. deep and a minimum of 9 in. wide. Width is measured in 3-inch increments and may be as wide as 27 or 30 in. Overhead cabinets have two standard depths, 12 or 24 in., with a variety of heights starting at approximately 12 in. and increasing in 3- or 6-inch increments. Widths are similar to those of base cabinets.
