A washing machine that doesn't work usually has one of two problems.
Whirlpool is a brand name that many consumers have trusted over the years. Even though they make a very good washing machine, no washing machine is above the need for occasional maintenance and repair. When your Whirlpool washing machine isn't working properly, there are two ways to diagnose the problem. If the washing machine isn't spinning, the problem probably resides in the washing machine belt. If the washing machine isn't draining, then there is probably a clog in the drain tube.
Instructions
Machine Won't Spin
1. Unplug your Whirlpool washing machine from the wall. Pull the washing machine out so you can have access to the back of the unit. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the control panel on top of the unit.
2. Lift the top panel off of the unit and set it aside. Remove the screws on the bottom of the unit so you can take the side and front panels off of the washing machine.
3. Locate the washing machine belt. This will be in the back of the unit under the washer basket. If the belt has snapped, it will probably be on the floor. If the belt hasn't snapped, but has come off of the motor, it might just be hanging off of the motor.
4. Stretch the belt until you can get it off of the motor. Check the belt for any tears or cracks and replace it if necessary.
5. Reattach the belt or replace the belt with your new one. Replace all of the panels and the screws. Reattach the control panel to the top of the unit. Plug the unit in and test it to make sure the washer is spinning.
Machine Won't Drain
6. Unplug your Whirlpool washer from the wall. Rock the unit backward and place a towel or a piece of carpet under the unit. This will help so you don't scratch your floor when you move the unit.
7. Move the unit outside. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the control panel on top of the unit.
8. Lift the top panel off of the unit and set it aside. Remove the screws on the bottom of the unit so you can take the side and front panels off of the washing machine.
9. Locate the drain tube. This will be on the left-hand side of the unit coming off of the basket. Unplug it from the unit and allow the water to drain from the basket. Pull the clog from the drain tube.
10. Reattach the drain tube to the unit. Replace all of the panels and the screws. Reattach the control panel to the top of the unit. Plug the unit in and test it to make sure the washer is spinning.
