Clean My Grill

Keep your grill clean for the best tasting food.

Now that you have purchased the perfect grill you should make sure you take the time and effort to keep it looking good as long as possible. Remember the better you care for your grill the more time you will be able to use it.If you purchased a stainless steel grill you should know that under certain situations it will still stain, rust or even discolor. If you clean your grill each time you use it and do a few preventative things you will extend its usable life. As a general rule you should lightly clean your grill each time you use it, and do a thorough cleaning before each grilling season begins. This may require that you take portions of it apart.

Instructions

1. Clean your stainless steel grill with a soft cloth and a good quality non-abrasive cleaner.

Never use metal brushes, steel wool or abrasive cleaning products to clean stainless steel. Remember to make sure you are using a cleaner that does not leave residue, like a stainless steel polish. When heated the residue can discolor the surface of your stainless steel. Stainless steel will scratch easily so make sure you are being careful when you are cleaning it.

2. Clean your grates on your grill every time you use it. This helps prevent food from sticking on your grill. A good wire brush will be the best tool for this job. The best time to clean your grates is just after you finish cooking. Wait until your grill has cooled slightly, but is still warm. Take your brush and brush off any remaining food particles. It is much easier to clean your grill after you cook than waiting until the food has cooled down. If your grate is cast iron, make sure you clean it first then brush on some oil with a paper towel to avoid rusting. You should also lightly brush any debris from the inside of your grill while cleaning your grates to avoid old food particles from getting into your next meal.

3. Lift out the cooking grate and clean off the barrier above the burners. This could be lava rock, briquettes, or a metal plate. However, it should get cleaned of the cooked on grease and food particles periodically. It is easiest to clean this by taking the items out of the grill and using hot soapy water to remove the grease. If they are too heavily encrusted with grease and cooked food particles you should replace them to avoid the bad tasting smoke that they will produce. Before putting you barrier back into your grill take a minute to inspect the burners, making sure there is nothing blocking the flow of the gas. If they are clogged and you can clean them, use a thin piece of wire and insert it into the gas holes.

4. Stainless steel has a tendency to discolor from the heat, especially on the lid. While you can minimize the discoloration by not over heating your grill or by not letting it preheat for too long, all stainless steel grills are subject to discoloration. Another way to help prevent discolorations is to keep the lid of your grill open for a few minutes while the grill is cooling off. This allows excess heat to escape from the cooking chamber.

5. Protect your grill from the elements. When you purchase a grill the first very next thing you need is a good quality grill cover. Your grill, whether it is stored outside or in a garage, should be covered until you use it. Cover it back up when it has cooled. This will help keep the elements off of your grill and keep it looking good when not in use. A good quality grill cover should have a felt liner on the inside to absorb any moisture which will also draw the moisture away from the grill. The felt liner also protects the grill from the cover.
