Someone in a transitional job may not intend to make a career out of it.
Transitional jobs are positions designed to help unemployed people make the move, or transition, from public assistance to unsubsidized employment. Participants undertake these jobs with the help of government social agencies, which are dedicated to reducing unemployment and dependence on welfare programs. Some states provide related participatory programs, addressing issues of homelessness, substance abuse and teen pregnancy.
Cleaning and Maintenance
Transitional jobs are generally low-skilled positions, because many recipients of these jobs have few marketable skills; for example, they may have poor mental or physical health, low educational attainment, limited work experience or limited English competency. Many transitional jobs are in cleaning and maintenance -- in restaurants, office buildings or other commercial facilities. Cleaning and maintenance transitional jobs can act as valuable stepping stones from unemployment to a permanent position.
Food Services
The food services sector is huge and very complex, so there is always enough activity to accommodate transitional jobs. Such jobs may include positions as chefs, waiters, caterers, dishwashers and food preparers in schools, restaurants, prisons, long-term care homes and other institutions. The food service industry provides opportunities for advancement. A motivated and interested person can begin as a dishwasher and over time, learn enough about food service to become a chef.
Clerical Work
Clerical work is a productive transitional activity for an individual who lacks marketable skills. Learning about how offices work, corporate etiquette and computer skills can provide a formerly unemployed person with valuable additions for a resume. Like the food service industry, the world of clerical work is vast and permeates many different industries. Many viable opportunities in the field exists -- beyond a transitional job -- for someone who acquires the requisite skills.
PC Repair
The repair and maintenance of home computers is a kind of transitional job that participants can use within the context of nine-to-five employment or in a self-employment scenario. Computers are widespread throughout society, and millions of people know use them, but far fewer have any skills in repairing and maintaining them. Mastering these skills can lead not only to escape from the welfare treadmill but to a lucrative career.
