Kitchen Planning Rules

The kitchen is one of the most significant rooms in the home and should be planned with care. A place to gather and prepare meals, a well-designed kitchen can mean the difference between a frustrating space and a kitchen the homeowner will enjoy. Following a few simple guidelines when designing the kitchen can ensure the kitchen is a smooth, comfortable, well-organized space.

Work Triangle

Respecting the work triangle is the single most important step to planning the kitchen. The work triangle concerns itself with the placement of the stove, sink, and refrigerator. The National Kitchen and Bath Association says that a proper work triangle is formed when lines can be drawn between the stove and the sink, the sink and the refrigerator, and the refrigerator and the stove. According to the NKBA these imaginary connections should total 26 inches of space or less, with no single side of the triangle shorter than 4 feet and longer than 9 feet.

Clearance

A well-designed kitchen should allow at least 36 inches of clearance for moving between fixtures, appliances, and counters. Adopting this standard allows for appliance and cabinet doors have space to open unhindered and allowing for adequate clearance ensures the kitchen is uncrowded and comfortable for users. Kitchen doorway clearance should be at least 32 inches wide and no more than 24 inches deep and no major kitchen passage should cross the work triangle's path.

Work Space

Kitchen work spaces should include counter top work spaces of at least two different heights. Counters should be 28 to 36 inches high, 36 to 45 inches high, and counter heights should always been measured from the finished floor. Well-designed kitchen's should have at least 36 inches of counter work space, in addition to space for the microwave, and not including islands. Allow for at least 18 inches of additional space beside the microwave oven when possible.

Organization

Organization is important to thoughtfully designing a well-planned kitchen. A microwave oven should be installed at a height of 24 to 48 inches above the finished floor. A dishwasher should always be installed beside a sink, or in an island adjacent to a sink. Install drawer pulls and knobs that can be opened with one hand. Allow for in-kitchen dining space, such as a nook for a table, or a bar. Install outlets near all counter spaces, each with a ground fault circuit interrupter. Include proper lighting for all work spaces, including the range hood, and allow for 10 percent of the kitchen's square footage for windows.
