Double glazing is the process of reinforcing the glass or plastic panes of doors or windows. Double glazing involves using two layers of glass or plastic panes to shore up the windows and doors. Many benefits come from this process, though double glazing also has its downsides. Here are the pros and cons of double glazing
Added Security
Most home break-ins happen either through the doors or the windows. The use of double gazing increases the difficulty for an intruder. It increases the amount of time the intruder would need to break into your home. After breaking the first layer, a security alarm could be triggered. The intruder may not have time, nor presumably the inclination, to break the second layer once the security alarm is blazing.
Better Insulation
One of the biggest advantages is that double glazing increases the insulation of your home significantly. Less heat or air would be allowed to penetrate into or out of the home. This means less heating and air conditioning cost for the home. Openings and cracks along the windows makes it harder to warm or cool a house. Double glazing also offers additional protection from bad weather and storms.
Noise Reduction
Double glazing helps to reduce outside noise. Outside noise could be so distracting and disturbing even to the point of interrupting sleep, particularly when one lives in noisy neighbourhoods. Double glazing would offer some help in this area.
Cons of Double Glazing
One of the disadvantages of double glazing comes from its inability to stop heat coming from the sun from penetrating into the house. For instance one can see sun rays inside the home if sun is shining directly on the double-glazed windows. Tinting the outer window may appear as an option, but that would totally block sunlight from entering the house altogether, leaving the home darker.
House Appearance
Double glazing has another disadvantage of altering your home's aesthetics. After its installation, the home owner may not like the altered new view of their house. This problem is more particular to older homes than newer ones. This problem nevertheless may be less significant when one considers the cost saving.
