Fleas are well-known little pests that wreck havoc in the homes of cat and dog owners. Fortunately, there are many non-chemical based methods for controlling fleas in and outside of the home, including using Dawn dish detergent. Though Dawn is an instant remedy for fleas on the pet, it does not repel fleas in the long term and repeat treatments may be necessary.
Dawn Dish Detergent for Fleas on Pets
Instead of using harmful insecticides on dogs and cats to kill fleas, pet owners can instead opt to use Dawn dish detergent. According to the Cooperative Extension System in Alabama, simply adding a few drops of the liquid Dawn dish detergent to a warm bath for washing the pet will kill fleas instantly. The pet should be allowed to sit in the Dawn bath mixture for approximately 10 minutes before rinsing. Be sure to rinse well to remove all of the soap from the pet. A follow-up treatment may be necessary if there is an infestation in the home or yard.
Dawn Dish Detergent for Fleas in the Lawn
Dawn dish detergent is also useful for killing fleas that live in your yard. Killing fleas in the yard is an important step in treating an infestation, as simply letting a pet back inside from the outdoors can bring a new population into the home. For lawn treatment, mix a few drops of Dawn dish detergent with water and spray it onto the lawn. This treatment can also be repeated monthly as a flea prevention method.
Lawn Care to Reduce Flea Populations
Regular lawn maintenance will help prevent future flea infestations from occurring. It is important to regularly mow your lawn. Well-kept, mowed lawns allow more sunlight to reach the soil. When the sunlight warms the soil, it kills flea eggs and larvae. This helps reduce and control the flea population in the yard. It should also be noted that ants will also eat flea larvae and eggs.
Dawn Dish Detergent for Fleas in the Home
A few drops of Dawn dish detergent can also be mixed into a spray bottle and sprayed into problem areas of the home, such as on carpets or pet bedding. However, some Dawn products, such as Dawn with bleach, may cause discoloration. Furthermore, it will leave behind a soapy residue, especially if too much soap is used in the mixture. Regular vacuuming and washing pet bedding in hot water is an alternative option that can also be effective in combating flea infestations in the home.
