One possible culprit for the noise is an overloaded dishwasher.
Many dishwashers come with user-friendly features, such as power scrubbing, large-capacity tubs, speed or delay wash cycles, adjustable racks, sanitize option, heated dry and specific cycles for certain types of dishes, such as pots and pans or china. In addition, most dishwashers are designed to be quiet while operating. However, if the dishwasher starts to make an unusual noise during use, such as squeaking, some troubleshooting might be helpful.
Overloading
It is important to resist the temptation to overload a dishwasher in order to get more dishes done faster. However, a squeaking noise might occur if items are placed too closely together and are rubbing together. Place items in the dishwasher so they don't touch. Use the clips for delicate items so they do not rattle around during the cycle.
Food Grinder
Many dishwashers have a fine food grinder on the bottom of the tub. This device chops up large pieces of food that drop during the wash and then dispenses the debris. If an item falls from the racks into the food grinder, it can make an unusual noise. Pull out the bottom rack and look for foreign objects in the tub that may be causing the noise.
Spray Arms
Take a look inside the dishwasher. Are items hanging down from the top rack? If so, the spray arm may be bumping or pushing past the hanging item, creating a squeaking noise. Remove or change the position of items as necessary so the spray arm can move unobstructed.
Repair
While it is possible that the noise may go away and is simply caused by an errant dish or utensil in the wrong place, if the dishwasher continues to squeak after two or three cycles, it may be time to contact a service professional. Potential problems include issues with the motor, heater fan, pump or inlet valve, and these issues require professional assistance.
