Raised Countertop Ideas

A raised countertop is one way to add seating to your kitchen space.

Create a space to pull up a stool in your kitchen by adding a creative raised countertop to your kitchen design. Raised countertops typically measure 42 to 48 inches high and are usually part of another element, such as a kitchen island. You can install any type of countertop as part of a raised countertop, including tile or laminate.

Add Color

Spice up your kitchen space by adding color to your raised kitchen countertop. Cover it in bright-colored tile or laminate, or purchase a slab of stained concrete or colored natural stone to create a countertop. Like a kitchen island itself, a raised kitchen countertop can serve as the focal point for the rest of the room. Choose a bold red or bright blue to make a statement or lighten up the space by installing a white marble countertop.

Get Detailed

If the rest of your kitchen tends towards the simple but you want a new look, get detailed. Add a detailed edge, such as a piece of hand-carved trim, to the edge of your raised countertop to create a new feel to the room. If you're replacing your countertops completely, choose a slab stone with carved or rough, rocky edges to add a little detail to the space. Create a tile border in a different color around the outside edge of your raised countertop, or wrap a metal strip in a bold color, such as metallic blue, around the edge of your raised countertop to give it a retro feel.

Make It Different

Even though it's typically attached to another standard countertop, a raised countertop is an element all its own, so make it different. Cover your standard countertops in a dark laminate or tile, and then cover your raised countertop in something else. If your standard countertop is a dark, natural stone, cover the raised countertop in colorful tiles or install a gray concrete slab. If your countertops are butcher block, create your raised countertop using white marble.
