If you find yourself staring at your utility bill in horror, you may need to upgrade your appliances. Energy Star-rated appliances went through several government tests to earn their label. These appliances have high ratings in performance, energy efficiency and features. Approved household appliances range from dishwashers to refrigerators to clothes washing machines to dehumidifiers. Each appliance will save you money over time.
Clothes Washers
Your clothes washer needs electricity to run and water to do the job. Energy Star reports that their approved models use an average of 37 percent less energy and 50 percent less water than a traditional clothes washer. Energy-efficient models come in full-size, stackable and smaller, under-the-cabinet units. Energy Star recommends models by the brands Amana, Bosch and Electrolux. These brands have good energy efficiency and a low water usage.
Dehumidifiers
Dehumidifiers draw in moisture from the air, which can help you breathe easier if you have breathing problems. Energy Star rates dehumidifiers on how many liters of water they remove for every kilowatt-hour of energy they consume. Energy Star reports that customers save an average of $20 a year by purchasing a qualified dehumidifier. Energy Star recommends dehumidifiers made by De'Longhi, Electrolux and GE. These brands produce the most output using the least amount of electricity based on their size.
Refrigerators
Energy Star reports that their qualified refrigerators use 20 percent less energy than the federal standard for refrigerators. Energy Star recommends brands like Electrolux, GE and Haier for full-size models and Frigidaire, KitchenAid and Whirlpool for compact models. To maximize your energy savings, purchase the smallest refrigerator you need. Models that have freezers on top and do not include automatic ice makers or in-door ice dispensers use less energy than other models.
Dishwashers
Dishwashers come in both standard and compact models. With continual use, the standard models use less energy than the compact models. However, Energy Star reports that their recommended products have 10 percent more energy efficiency over other models. Energy Star recommends brands like Kenmore, KitchenAid and Danby for compact dishwashers, and brands like Bosch, Whirlpool and Viking for standard models. You can make the most of your energy-efficient dishwasher by using the air-dry setting and eliminating heat-dry on the dishes.
