Homemade Detergent Recipe

Homemade Detergent Recipe

Making your own laundry detergent at home can both save money and help you ensure that your detergent doesn't contain toxic materials or materials or fragrances that could trigger allergic reactions. The basic ingredients of laundry detergent are simple.

Typical Ingredients

One of the basic ingredients of many home made laundry detergents is simple, shredded bar soap. Shred bar soap in a food processor or using a grater. Although any bar soap will do, you can make an unscented natural soap from natural, organic bar soap.

Washing soda is sodium bicarbonate. It is different than baking soda, and is sometimes said to be a bit more caustic. Washing soda is a detergent booster, water softener, and helps your grated bar soap to clean better.

Borax also improves the cleaning power of soaps and detergents. It also softens water and can work as a natural alternative to color-safe bleach. In addition to being an ingredient in homemade laundry detergent, borax can be used on its own as a stain remover or pre-treatment for laundry.

Recipe

A number of recipes are possible using these three ingredients. For a simple detergent, mix 1 cup of grated bar soap, 1/2 cup washing soda and 1/2 cup borax. By increasing the borax and washing soda to 1 full box and adding the three ingredients to three gallons of nearly boiling water until it dissolves, you can create a laundry gelatin that works well in cold water.
