Fix A Maytag Dishwasher Wu504 Detergent Dispenser That Does Not Open

The Maytag dishwasher model # WU504 has a wax motor that operates electrically by the timer. When the timer reaches the point for detergent to add to the dishwasher, the wax motor activates the dispenser door to open, allowing the detergent to enter the dishwasher. Replacing the wax motor in a dishwasher will correct a non-opening detergent dispenser.

Instructions

1. Turn the electric breaker off to the kitchen area containing the Maytag dishwasher.

2. Open the dishwasher door. Insert a screwdriver into one screw on the inside door panel. Turn the screwdriver counterclockwise to loosen the screw and remove it by pulling it straight out. Repeat this process to remove screws on the top, bottom and left sides of the internal door panel. Do not remove the hinge screws on the bottom of the panel.

3. Grasp the door panel with one hand on each side. Pull it up and out of the dishwasher door.

4. Locate the wax motor near the detergent dispenser. It will have two wires connected to it with snap on connections. Take note of the two wire positions on the motor.

5. Place a pair of needle-nose pliers on one side of the connector for one wire. Grasp the opposite side of the connector with the other hand and pull the two sides apart in opposite directions. Repeat this process to disconnect the second wire.

6. Set the new wax motor on the dishwasher door near its position of installation. Grasp the door connector with one hand and the motor connector in the other. Press the two pieces together to make the connection. Repeat this procedure to connect the second wire.

7. Set the inside door panel on the dishwasher door aligning the screw holes. Replace each screw with a screwdriver by turning them clockwise to tighten.

8. Clean any detergent residue away from the cup with a wet washcloth. Turn the breaker on to the dishwasher. Activate the dishwasher to clean any dishes that did not have detergent in the cycle.
