Connect A Power Cord To A Dishwasher

Connect a power cord to a dishwasher to finish installation.

Once you've finished connecting the plumbing and drain lines for your dishwasher, the last step is to connect the power cord. The cords provide electricity to the dishwasher pump and heating element during operation. The cords are typically attached to an electrical panel located on the underside of the dishwasher cabinet.

Instructions

1. Turn off the electricity to the power cord you will be connecting to the dishwasher. Locate the circuit for the dishwasher cord at the main circuit breaker. Flip the switch to the "Off" position. Use a voltmeter to test the dishwasher cord and ensure that the power has been cut.

2. Remove the kick panel at the bottom of the dishwasher. This is the panel located below the appliance's door that allows access to the components inside. On some dishwashers, you may also need to remove the toe panel, which is a smaller panel located beneath the kick panel. Remove the screws holding these panels in place and pull them off the frame. If needed, open the dishwasher door to access the screws on top of the kick panel before removing.

3. Locate the electrical panel on the underside of the dishwasher. These are usually placed near the pump, located beneath the center of the dishwasher cabinet. Unscrew the panel to gain access to the dishwasher electrical terminals.

4. Use a wire stripper to remove approximately 1/2-inch of wire from the black and white terminals on the incoming dishwasher cord.

5. Connect the black incoming wire to the terminal on the dishwasher marked "Hot" or "Live." Use a pair of needle-nose pliers to crimp the wire around the terminal screw. Tighten the terminal screw with a screwdriver. Repeat this process for the white wire, connecting it to the terminal marked "Neutral." Connect the bare copper wire from the cord to the green terminal screw. Some dishwashers may have black, white and green wires in place on the panel, rather than terminal screws. In this case, splice the same colored wires together with a wire nut and secure them with electrical tape.

6. Gently press the loose electrical cord into the electrical panel and secure the panel cover with the screws.

7. Replace the kick and toe panels. Secure with screws. Restore power to the dishwasher circuit.
