Repair a Leaky Dishwasher
Service repairs for dishwashers can cost more than a hundred dollars. Problems such as leaky dishwashers can be fixed at home with some minor repairs and parts. Make sure that your dishwasher is what is leaking in your kitchen. Roof leaks, spilled pet water bowls and plumbing problems can cause water to pool in the floor. Pull out your dishwasher's instruction manual so you can identify the right parts to check. Fix your dishwasher and get back to a clean floor and dishes.
Instructions
1. Turn your dishwasher on and look for water puddling under the door or on the sides. Check the latch by pulling to see if it is loose. If it is loose, wait for your dishwasher to stop running and open the door.
2. Locate the adjustable latch plate on the top of the dishwasher. Use a screwdriver to tighten the latch plate. Open and close the door to find the right fit. It should be snug enough to hold the door but not so tight that it bends the latch.
3. Examine the gasket to see if it has cracks or tears. The gasket is the piece of plastic that seals in the water. It will feel thin and bendable. Contact your dishwasher's manufacturer for a new gasket.
4. Soak the gasket in hot water for 10 minutes so that it it is easier to install. Stiff gaskets are hard to clip into their screws. Remove the old one by unscrewing the screws. Place the new gasket on and replace the screws.
5. Take off the bottom plates of the dishwasher. Inspect the drain hoses and water inlet valve to be sure that it hasn't come off. The drain hose is what connects to the pump that connects to the sink's hose. You may see clamps that have come off or become loose. There are two hoses that run into the water inlet valve. Reattach any hoses that have slipped off.
