Winterize Dish Washers

Winterize Dish Washers

Many homeowners will need to winterize their dishwasher at some point during the time they own their home. Some owners may be leaving for a lengthy winter vacation. Others own homes that are vacant during the wintertime. No matter what the reason, a dishwasher that is in a house with temperatures that may freeze will need to be winterized. This will prevent water inside hoses, valves and pumps from expanding and causing major problems.

Instructions

1. Open the doors under the sink. There will be a hose leading from the hot water supply in the direction of the dishwasher. Turn off the valve that connects this hose to the water supply. Place a towel under this connection. Use an adjustable wrench to remove the hose from the connection. Allow the hose to drain any water onto the towel. Remove the towel.

2. Under the sink there will be an additional hose that leads from the drain pipe in the direction of the dishwasher. This hose is the dishwasher drain. Place a towel under the connection for this hose. Use the adjustable wrench to undo this hose and allow it to drain on the towel. Remove the towel.

3. Look at the front of the dishwasher. At the base of the dishwasher will be an access panel. Use the appropriate screwdriver to remove the screws and pull the panel away. Look under the dishwasher to view the pump. Place a towel under the pump. Use the appropriate screwdriver to undo the clamps from any hoses leading to the pump. Allow water to drain from the pump onto the towel. Remove the towel. Reattach the access panel.

4. Open the front of the dishwasher. Open the top of the bottle of RV anti-freeze. Pour approximately one cup of antifreeze into the base of the dishwasher as close to the drain as possible. The RV anti-freeze will drain into the dishwasher pump and prevent freezing of any residual water remaining in the pump.

5. Turn off power to the dishwasher at the circuit box.
