Fix Rust On A Dishwasher Basket

Although dishwashers clean pots, utensils, and dishes, at times you have to clean the dishwasher itself. The various components of a dishwasher can become rusty. Most baskets in dishwashers keep the knives, forks, and spoons in place during the wash cycles. But if the basket develops rust and this rust is not removed, rust holes may form. This can lead to utensils falling through the basket and causing serious damage to the dishwasher. The best course of action is to regularly clean the basket to keep rust at bay.

Instructions

1. Pull out the basket from the rack. Most dishwashers have removable baskets.

2. Scrub off all the surface rust with a steel wool pad.

3. Combine in a bowl 2 parts salt and 1 part lime juice. The mixture creates an effective rust removing paste. The lime juice has citric acid to break down the rust. The salt’s tiny particles act as an abrasive.

4. Apply the paste to the rust on the basket with a sponge or paper towel. Leave the paste on the rust for two to three hours.

5. Rinse the basket under warm tap water in the sink. If the basket is not removable, dampen a sponge and wipe the basket clean. Dry completely with a kitchen towel or paper towel.

6. Apply dishwasher rack touch-up paint to the basket. Use the brush included with the paint. The paint provides a protective layer against further rust.
