Uninstall An Insinkerator

InSinkErator Worldwide manufactures a variety of residential and commercial food-service equipment. The company is especially well-known for its line of garbage disposers. Although they are a handy kitchen appliance when used and maintained properly, garbage disposers can be problematic. To remove a disposer, you basically reverse the installation procedure, then install a normal sink drain. If you are replacing your InSinkErator with another brand, you will still need to uninstall your old disposer completely, since the mounting parts usually aren't interchangeable.

Instructions

1. Turn off the power to the disposer at the circuit breaker.

2. Place a pan under the disposer to catch drips. Loosen the disposer drain connection with an adjustable wrench. Slip the drain elbow off the disposer outflow pipe and swivel it out of the way. Unscrew the hose clamp holding the dishwasher outflow hose to the disposer if so equipped. Remove the hose and place it out of the way.

3. Insert the InSinkErator wrenchette tool supplied with the disposer into the mounting lug. If you no longer have the tool, a stout screwdriver or large Allen wrench will suffice, provided you have sufficient clearance. Place one hand under the disposer as you turn the mounting lug to prevent the disposer from falling. Lower the disposer away from the flange.

4. Turn the disposer upside down and place it in the plastic pan. Remove the metal plate that covers the electrical connections. Use a circuit tester to make sure the power to the unit is off. Disconnect the disposer wires from the power supply by removing the wire nuts. Screw the wire nuts back onto the supply wires and tape them in place, then place the electrical supply line safely out of the way.

5. Unscrew the mounting assembly from the bottom of the sink drain flange. Pry off the snap ring with a screwdriver. Remove the remaining pieces of the mounting assembly from the drain flange.

6. Pull the drain flange out of the sink drain hole from above. Pry the flange loose with a putty knife if necessary, being careful not to scratch the sink. Use a putty knife and rags to remove the old plumber's putty from the sink drain hole. Proceed with installation of a new disposer or replacement sink drain.
