Fix A Dishwasher That Is Overflowing Because Of Too Much Soap

If your dishwasher starts leaking foam, the problem usually involves the wrong soap or a clogged filter screen that prevents water from draining. Automatic dishwasher detergent is formulated to produce minimal suds, but liquid dish soap for use in the sink is designed to create a large amount of suds. If you substitute liquid dish soap for dishwasher detergent, a sea of foam on the kitchen floor is the likely result. Fix this problem with a few simple techniques for dissipating the suds.

Instructions

1. Stop the dishwasher to prevent any more soap from leaking while you work. Arrange towels in front of the dishwasher to keep yourself from slipping on the slick floor.

2. Open the dishwasher door, and remove all dishes. Take out the lower rack, and set it aside.

3. Bail out the suds in the dishwasher with a bucket. Remove as much of the foam as possible. Dump the suds into the sink.

4. Pour enough ice into the dishwasher to cover the bottom. Soap suds dissipate as the temperature drops.

5. Toss a handful of table salt into the dishwasher on top of the foam to help dissolve the suds.

6. Twist the filter screen in the bottom of the appliance counterclockwise to remove it. Rinse the part under running water to clear all clogs, then replace the filter screen.

7. Close the dishwasher, and run a cycle from the beginning while the appliance is empty.

8. Pour a cup of vinegar into the dishwasher, and run it once more to eliminate remaining soap.
