A toe kick is a frame that a cabinet or appliance is set upon. The toe kick is recessed several inches to allow you to stand closer to the cabinet counter. You may want to build a toe kick for your dishwasher to make it more ergonomic to use.
Instructions
1. Measure the bottom of the dishwasher. Use the tape measure to check the dimensions of the front and the sides of the dishwasher.
2. Adjust a table saw to make a 4-inch cut. A standard toe kick is 4 inches in height. Cut a sheet of 3/4-inch medium-density fiberboard into 4-inch strips.
3. Cut two pieces of the 4-inch MDF to the length required for the front and back boards of the toe kick. Use a circular saw to make the cuts. These boards will match the length of the front and back of the bottom of the dishwasher.
4. Cut two pieces of 4-inch MDF for the sides and two pieces for cross supports. These boards should be cut 5 1/2 inches shorter than the length of the sides of the dishwasher. This will allow for a 4-inch recess in the front of the dishwasher.
5. Place the boards on a workbench. Put the boards in a position to form a 4-inch-tall box on the workbench. Line up a front board and a side board. Butt the end of the side board into the front board. The boards should be flush on the top and on the sides.
6. Load a staple gun with 1 1/4-inch staples. Hold the ends of the top and side boards together. Shoot a staple through the front board to connect it to the side board. Place a staple near the top and one near the bottom of the front board. Add another staple in the middle of the top and bottom staples to secure the boards together. Staple the back board and the other side board together using the same procedures.
7. Put a cross support on the top left side of the toe kick. The board should be flush with the top and side of the toe kick. Shoot several evenly spaced staples through the front board of the toe kick to secure the cross support. Repeat this procedure to connect the back of the cross support to the toe kick. Connect the cross support to the right side of the toe kick in a similar manner.
