Silicone bakeware is versatile, durable and easy to clean in dishwashers.
Silicone bakeware has increased in popularity in many of today's professional and home kitchens. Not only is it a colorful addition to your cookware, it is durable and easy to use. Silicone products can be used in many of the same ways as metal, glass or ceramic dishes. They can be baked in the oven at temperatures up to 600 degrees F, used in the microwave for quick heating and even cleaned in ordinary home dishwashers.
Usage
Any piece of silicone bakeware can be placed in the dishwasher for easy cleaning. It can be used on the top or bottom shelf for easy cleaning. Because the bakeware is nonstick, it is easy to remove the contents from the bakeware before cleaning. Very little pre-rinsing is required, though a quick rinse should remove any lasting food. Avoid placing the bakeware in contact with sharp utensils, which can cut or poke holes in the silicone during washing.
Tips
Silicone bakeware is nonstick and nonporous. This means that whatever you put inside the bakeware can be easily removed once it is cooled with the flexible shell of the material. Because it is so simple to remove the contents of the bakeware, it does not need to be washed in the dishwasher after each use. Instead, it can be wiped clean with a damp, soapy cloth and wiped dry for easy cleaning.
Benefits
There are many benefits to using silicone bakeware. Not only is it easy to clean by hand or in the dishwasher, it is more hygienic than conventional cooking supplies. This is because the material is nonporous and nonabsorbent, which means that bacteria and other organisms cannot penetrate the walls of the silicone and contaminate your food. Aside from use in the oven, you can use your silicone bakeware in the freezer to make cold foods in interesting shapes.
Warnings
Perhaps the only non-recommended use for silicone bakeware is for cooking over a stove or open flame. Before using, always spray the bakeware lightly with a thin layer of cooking spray. Allow the food to cool for several minutes before attempting to remove it from the bakeware. While silicone can stand up to heat, it can be cut with sharp knives or punctured with sharp forks.
