Using the wrong dishwasher detergent can bring an avalanche of suds.
A dishwasher overflowing with soapy water is almost always the result of using the wrong type of detergent in the appliance. Only non-sudsing detergents designed for automatic dishwashers should be used. If someone makes a mistake, perhaps grabs the wrong bottle of dishwashing liquid and adds it to the dishwasher, you'll soon see thick waves of suds oozing between the door and kickplate, or through the gasket on the sides of the door. Clean up the mess with the aid of a few household products.
Instructions
1. Place towels on the floor below the dishwasher to mop up spills and to catch the suds that will fall when you open the appliance.
2. Unlock and lower the dishwasher door to slide out the bottom dish rack. Empty the rack of all dishes and lift the rack onto the sink.
3. Scoop out the piles of soap foam inside the appliance using a plastic cup. You can also unfold a towel and use it like a net to scoop out large quantities of foam in less time, although some of it may end up on the floor if you take this shortcut.
4. Sprinkle table salt on the remaining suds in the bottom of the dishwasher.
5. Pour ice cubes into the bottom of the appliance to lower the water temperature, which causes suds to dissipate.
6. Close the dishwasher and restart to finish the cycle. Leave the towels in place to catch any leaks.
7. Open the dishwasher and pour 2 cups of white vinegar into the bottom and close and run another full cycle to dissipate any remaining soap suds.
