Install A Vanity Countertop

When your bathroom vanity countertop gets worn and scratched, replace and update it yourself with a few basic tools. You don't need a professional to install a new countertop that adds value to the bathroom and to your home.

Instructions

1. Determine the measurements of the current countertop to make sure you replace it with one of the proper size. If you are also replacing the sink and fixtures, be sure the new countertop can support your configuration.

2. Before beginning work, turn off the water supply to the sink with the shutoff valves underneath it. If there are no shutoff valves, turn off the water at the water main, often located in the basement near the water heater.

3. Remove the vanity countertop and sink. Slice through the caulk surrounding the sink and countertop with a utility knife. Lift the edges of the countertop with a pry bar. If you are reusing the sink and fixtures, save them in a safe place, and throw the other items in a large trash can. Clean up the dust and debris with a shop vacuum.

4. Lay a carpenter's level on the old countertop to make sure it is even. If the vanity top is not even, you will need to place some wooden shims under the new countertop to level it. If the old one is level, you can lay the new countertop on the vanity, but first place a thin line of caulk around the edge. Slide the countertop back with your fingers so it is flush against the wall.

5. Lower the sink into the hole and place a line of silicone caulk around the edge to seal it.
