Care For Sewer Traps When Gone

RV anti-freeze will protect traps during cold weather

Sewer traps are found on the drainpipes of household sinks, tubs and toilets. The purpose for sewer traps, which are commonly called P traps, is to create a water barrier between the house and the sewer line or septic tank. The water barrier prevents noxious and toxic fumes and odors from entering the house. Sinks and tubs have the traps directly under them while toilets have traps built into their base. Leaving a house unattended during warm weather does not pose a threat to the traps; however, during winter they can freeze and break when not being regularly used.

Instructions

1. Turn off the waterline valves leading to the sink or toilet. This is to prevent water from dripping into the fixture and down the drain or breaking in the event of freezing.

2. Put 2 cups of RV antifreeze down the drain of each sink and tub. The antifreeze will replace the water in the trap and keep any residual water from freezing.

3. Pour antifreeze into each toilet until it starts to back up into the bowl. Do not flush the antifreeze down as this will only push it out of the toilet; let the antifreeze flow down into the trap naturally.

4. Pour 3 cups of antifreeze into the drainpipes of washing machines to fill the drainpipe and trap.

5. Open the water valves and run water down the drains and flush the toilets to get the antifreeze out of the traps upon returning.
