Connect your dishwasher to a drain.
A dishwasher is a top time-saving device to install in your kitchen. After a dish cycle runs, the dirty dish water is pumped out through a hose and into your home's sewer system. The hose is connected to the closest drain outlet, which is usually the kitchen sink. You can connect a hose from a dishwasher to a drain without a disposal by installing what is called a dishwasher tailpiece. The tailpiece is the straight piece of plumbing just beneath your drain. A dishwasher tailpiece has a connection on one side for a dishwasher hose.
Instructions
Install Drain Connection
1. Open up the cabinet underneath the sink where you will be connecting the hose from the dishwasher. Remove anything in the cabinet to give yourself room to work.
2. Place the bucket underneath the curved pipe at the bottom section of the drain. Unscrew the couplings at either end with the pliers. Pull the curved p-trap out of the drain and empty the water inside into the bucket.
3. Unscrew the jamb nut on the underside of the sink with the pliers. Slide this and the rubber washers above off the end of the tailpiece.
4. Unscrew the tailpiece from the drain above by turning it counterclockwise. Apply pipe thread compound to the threads on the dishwasher tailpiece. Insert it into the drain above and tighten it by turning clockwise. Slide the rubber washer and jamb nut over the end of the tailpiece. Manipulate the jamb nut to slip it past the dishwasher hose nipple and tighten it in place on the underside of the drain.
5. Apply pipe thread compound to the threads on the p-trap. Slip this in place between the tailpiece and the sewer inlet in the wall. Tighten the couplings.
Connect Dishwasher Hose
6. Run the dishwasher hose through the cabinet spaces to the dishwasher tailpiece. Drill any holes through the cabinet, if needed, with the drill and spade bit.
7. Apply a few drops of dishwashing soap to the nipple on the tailpiece.
8. Slip the hose clamp over the end of the dishwashing hose. Slide the hose over the pipe nipple, twisting as you do so to help spread the dishwasher soap lubrication. Tighten the hose clamp with the screwdriver.
9. Locate the center of the hose. Using a pipe or hose clamp, mount this on the inside wall of the cabinet to that the center is higher than the connection at the drain.
