My Dishwasher Will Not Drain After The Rinse Cycle

Avoid stopping the dishwasher mid-cycle to help prevent problems with draining.

Problems with your dishwasher, including its failure to drain after the rinse cycle, may have several causes. Some of these problems, such as issues with the drain valve or impeller, require the help of a professional service technician, but some of the other possible problems are far simpler and can frequently be resolved by the user.

Sump Area

Take a look in the bottom of the dishwasher because items may have fallen out of the racks during the wash or rinse cycle and landed in the sump area in the tub rear. If this happens, the drain valve may be blocked, preventing water from exiting the dishwasher. Remove the bottom rack and pull out any items, including wet labels, dishes or debris that may have landed over the sump. Close the bottom rack and the dishwasher door and start a new drain cycle.

Garbage Disposal

It is fairly easy to think of every household appliance as a separate thing from the others, but the kitchen garbage disposal, air gap and dishwasher are all connected. Therefore, a clog in one of these elements creates a clog in the others. Turn the water on in the sink and run the garbage disposal to clear the kitchen drain, which may in turn clear any clogs from the dishwasher drain.

Air Gap

As mentioned above, the air gap is connected to the sink and the dishwasher and can both create and be affected by clogs in the system. To resolve, lift the dome off the air gap, disconnect the hoses and clean everything out. Then reconnect, close the cap and select a new dishwasher drain cycle.

Drain Hose and Loop

One other potential source of problems is the dishwasher drain hose. Before trying any troubleshooting, disconnect power to the dishwasher and then set some towels under the drain hose, which is usually found under the sink. Disconnect the hose and look for any obstructions, shaking the hose to clear any unseen debris. Clean out the hose inlet screens and then reconnect the hose. Make sure the drain hose creates a loop under the kitchen counter that is at least 18 to 20 inches from the ground in order for the water to drain properly.

Service

Take a look at the wash impeller under the spray arm, which looks like a small plastic fan. The drain impeller is underneath the wash impeller. If it seems to be broken or defective, it will need to be replaced. Likewise, if the drain valve is broken, service will be necessary. If all troubleshooting efforts fail to resolve the drain problem, contact a service center.
