Baking soda reliably removes odors from many appliances, including dishwashers.
If your dishwasher has started emitting an odor, you might be concerned that it's not effectively washing your dishes or, worse, that it's transferring its odors to your dishes. Though your dishwasher is supposed to save you time cleaning in the kitchen, sometimes the time-saving appliance needs cleaning also. Even those who rarely use their units need to occasionally address dishwasher odors, which are often stale or musty in infrequently used machines.
Instructions
1. Open your dishwasher and kneel close to it so you can easily reach inside. Sprinkle a generous amount of baking soda or borax all over the bottom of the appliance's interior.
2. Close the dishwasher's door. Run the appliance on the lightest cycle for only a few minutes. Allow the now dampened and well-distributed powder to sit overnight or for eight to 12 hours at least. Then open the unit and use your damp sponge to scrub the entire interior.
3. Add a lemon-scented dish-washing soap to the dishwasher's soap reservoir and run the empty dishwasher for a full cycle. If the smell persists, run the empty dishwasher again, this time without soap and on its hottest setting.
4. Eliminate very stubborn smells by opening the dishwasher -- run with no soap -- when it is in the part of its cycle when it is filled with water and add ¼ cup of liquid bleach. Close the door immediately and let the dishwasher proceed through the remainder of the cycle.
