Arrange Appliances

Kitchens are often the hub of the home.

Planning out a kitchen is an important task in home design. More often, kitchens are becoming the hub of the home, open to the family living space. While there are many aspects to a well-designed and functioning kitchen, consider a few things about where to place your appliances. Fortunately, there are many books, including workbooks, that can help you design your entire kitchen area to create that perfect space for your home.

Instructions

1. Consider how many people typically cook in your kitchen. If it is generally one person, arrange the sink and the two major kitchen appliances, refrigerator and stove, in a traditional triangular formation. Typically, the microwave is on top or near the stove or somewhere in the midst of this triangular shape.

2. Provide enough clearance around your cook top or stove. You will need at least 9 inches on one side and 15 inches on the other. If the cook top or stove is installed at an angle, such as in a corner, 9 inches on each side will suffice.

3. Install the dishwasher and oven where they can freely swing open. Also, leave enough room for your refrigerator and freezer doors to swing all the way open, which will vary among models.

4. Create a wider, more modern, open-spaced kitchen with different work stations, if more than one person is typically cooking or to appeal to more buyers, if desired. Appliances in this type of kitchen do not have to form a triangular shape, but rather have at least 36 inches of counter space next them. The microwave also has its own area.

5. Install an island and arrange appliances around the island. You can also have your cook top installed on the island (or even the sink installed there). In general, provide at least 42 inches between the counter and the island if only person usually cooks in the kitchen at one time, but at least 48 inches in kitchens where more than one person cooks at a time. If there is a side to your kitchen or island that will not be used regularly, you only need about 36 inches between the island and counter.
