Get A Dishwasher Empty Of Standing Water

Drain line problems may cause standing water in a dishwasher.

There are three main reasons for standing water in your dishwasher at the end of a cycle. if this problem has occurred since the appliance was first installed, the drain hose may be improperly installed. If this is a new development, the likely cause is either a clogged filter screen or a malfunctioning water pump. Check each of these issues one at a time to solve the problem. If the water pump is the culprit and the dishwasher is more than 12 years old, consider replacing the unit rather than repairing an old model nearing the end of its lifespan.

Instructions

1. Open the appliance and pull the lower rack forward.

2. Remove the food screen on the inside bottom of the appliance by twisting counterclockwise. Clean this part under running water to remove clogs that may prevent the appliance from draining.

3. Replace the screen and test the dishwasher. If it still will not drain, continue troubleshooting.

4. Open the kitchen cabinets below your sink next to the dishwasher to locate the corrugated plastic tube running from the dishwasher side of the cabinet to the drain pipe below the sink. This is the drain hose for the dishwasher. If it hangs in a "U" shape at the connection to the drain pipe, it must be elevated to improve drainage from the dishwasher.

5. Attach one end of the flexible metal stripping to the inside back wall of the cabinet above the drain hose, using a screw and screwdriver. Bend the stripping so it curves outward and down toward the wall.

6. Lift the drain hose so it is between the back cabinet wall and the stripping. Secure the lower end of the stripping to the wall with the second screw. With the drain hose elevated, gravity can now help the dishwasher pump empty the appliance more efficiently. Test the appliance. Continue troubleshooting if it still holds water at the end of the cycle.

7. Open the dishwasher and pull out the bottom rack. Bail out the standing water with a plastic cup, emptying the dirty water into the sink. Use a plastic cup to avoid damaging the waterproof liner inside.

8. Close the dishwasher and set the cycle to a light wash. Listen to the appliance as it enters the drain cycle near the end of the wash. If you cannot hear a rhythmic humming or the sound of water flushing into the sink drain pipe, the water pump is likely failing or broken. Contact a repair technician to check the pump, or consider replacing the dishwasher if it is at least 12 years old, which is the average lifespan for this appliance.
