Hotpoint is a brand of consumer appliances sold by General Electric (GE) appliances. Hotpoint produces quality dishwashers that are built to operate efficiently and last a long time. If, however, your dishwasher starts malfunctioning, troubleshoot the problem before taking it for service, especially if your warranty has expired.
No Power
If your Hotpoint dishwasher won't turn on, check that the dishwasher is snugly plugged into the outlet and that the outlet is working properly. Test the outlet by plugging in another appliance like a lamp. Your dishwasher will not operate during a power outage. Completely close the dishwasher door, and take the dishwasher off of the time-delay setting if applicable. Change out a burnt fuse, which has either broken wires or is black. Reset the circuit breaker if tripped. Verify that the water inlet hose is correctly connected and that the water supply valve is in the "On" position. Clean out the water supply hose, and unkink if bent.
Drying/Streaking
If your dishes are not drying properly, verify that you are using a heated drying cycle and not air dry. Use a rinse aid to assist with drying. Plasticware normally is not completely dry. If your glasses have a film on them or are dirty, increase the water temperature on your water heater. Add more detergent, and refrain from blocking the spray arm. Use the correct program for the dishes. Only use fresh (nonclumping detergent). Do not overload the racks.
Washing
Check the water supply, and verify that it is the "On" position if the tub is not filling with water. Unkink the water inlet hose if bent. If the appliance lock is on, turn off the dishwasher for 20 seconds, and then turn it back on. If you see a lot of sudsing, reduce the amount of detergent. If the dishwasher stops before the cycle is complete, check that you have power and water and don't overload the dishwasher. Your dishwasher normally pauses between cycles.
Noise/Error Messages
If you hear a knocking sound inside the Hotpoint dishwasher, stop the dishwasher and rearrange the dishes. This indicates that the spray arm is hitting the dishes. If you hear a knocking sound inside the inlet valves, ignore it as this is a normal operational sound. A rattling inside the dishwasher indicates that dishes are hitting against each other, which could damage them. Stop the dishwasher, and rearrange the order of the cookware. Error messages vary by model. Always read your manual to determine what's causing the error message. A common problem, however, is the water inlet hose, which involves a flashing "On/Off" indicator light and a number one on the display screen. Turn off the Hotpoint dishwasher turn off the water supply and call for service.
