Use Dish Soap for Laundry
Many people experience allergic reactions to the chemicals and surfactants in laundry detergents. Some people are concerned about the environmental impact of using laundry detergents. Others feel the high cost of laundry detergents is unnecessary and wasteful. There are many alternatives--soap nuts, water only, shaved bar soap and dish soap. Here's an easy way to convert your dish soap into a useful, convenient and pleasant laundry detergent.

Make Laundry Detergent from Your Dish Soap
1. Clean out an old laundry liquid bottle. Use small amounts of hot water to rinse an empty laundry liquid bottle until the water is clear. You will need to add about a quarter cup of hot water at a time, shake the bottle and pour it out. Do this several times, until there are no soap suds running out with the water.
2. Make your detergent. Pour 14 cups of hot water into the empty liquid laundry detergent bottle. Add two cups of liquid dish soap to the bottle. Cover the bottle and gently swirl to combine the water and dish soap. For a scented detergent, add seven drops of your favorite essential oil. Lavender, lemon, rosemary, lime, tea tree, sweet orange or eucalyptus oils all add a fresh, clean scent to laundry.
3. To use your new laundry liquid, gently shake, then measure out one cup of liquid and add it to the laundry load in your washing machine. You can typically use the cap of the laundry detergent bottle to measure the correct amount. Adjust the measurement according to your preference. You may also need to make adjustments based on how soiled your laundry load is.
4. Soften your laundry. You can add half of a cup of white vinegar to your laundry's rinse cycle. The vinegar will soften your clothes and help to remove any remaining soap residue. If you enjoy scented fabric softeners, buy a separate bottle of vinegar to be used solely for your laundry, so that essential oils can be added directly to the bottle. Add five to 10 drops of essential oils for every 16 oz. of vinegar .
