Build A Dolley For Moving

Save money on dolly rentals by building your own.

A dolly is a helpful tool for moving large or heavy objects like tables, couches and chairs. While you can purchase or rent a metal dolly for completing a move, it's also possible to make your own and spend less money. You can also save the homemade dolly for future moves, or times when you want wheels and wood to take some of the pressure off your arms and back when moving a heavy item around your home. All you need to make your own dolly is a few basic items from your local home improvement or hardware store. You may even already have what you need in your garage.

Instructions

1. Use a handsaw to cut an 8-foot long piece of 2-by-4 wood into four equal sections measuring 2 feet each.

2. Place two of the pieces on a flat surface vertically. Position the remaining two pieces on top of the first two pieces horizontally so that your cut 2-by-4 pieces form a 2-foot square. Screw the pieces together with a power drill using 1/2-inch wood screws. Thread two wood screws into each corner, fastening the pieces together.

3. Place a wheel caster in the center of the top left corner of the 2-by-4 square frame. Secure the wheel to the wood by threading four small wood screws into the four corners of the wheel caster base assembly. Repeat the process, attaching a wheel caster to each corner of the dolly.

4. Wrap 2-foot wide pieces of scrap carpet around the vertical beams of the dolly, which do not have wheel casters on them. Hammer the carpet into place with 1-inch-long wood nails or secure the carpet to the wood with a thick layer of wood glue. Allow the glue to dry for a few hours before using the dolly, if attaching the carpet to the wood with glue.

5. Flip the completed dolly over so the wheels are on the ground. Load a piece of furniture on top of it and use the dolly to help move heavy objects or pieces of furniture.
