Winterize Appliances

Leaves color your lawn and the thermostat dips toward the freezing point---winter approaches. You prepare yourself for spending the season in warmer enclaves, but it is also time to winterize your appliances for the harsh months ahead. Unprepared homes can leave you fixing cracked pipes and replacing appliances when you return in the spring. Appliances, especially those that use water, need to be prepared for the freezing temperatures of winter.

Instructions

1. Shut off the main water line that runs to your home. This will be located in your basement or near the street. Shut off and drain your pump and pressurized tank if you get your water from a well.

2. Turn open all faucets to clear water from the pipes.

3. Drain all appliances that use water. Open the water heater valve, disconnect water lines to the dishwasher, disconnect the clothes washer's water-in line, let the ice cube maker run out, empty toilets and ensure any other water-run appliances are dry.

4. Add a half-gallon of RV antifreeze to the clothes washer and set it to drain and spin. Fill toilets and drains with RV antifreeze.

5. Clean and disinfect all appliances to prevent any mold and mildew from developing during the winter.

6. Prop the refrigerator door open slightly. Leave a box of baking soda inside it to combat odors.

7. Unplug all appliances. If a specific area of the house will not be lighted with timers you can turn off the power at the circuit breaker.

8. Cover all appliance using dust covers.
