Busboys, also known as dining room attendants or bussers, are entry-level employees who work in restaurants. They usually receive an hourly wage and any tips the restaurant server wants to share. Despite the term "busboy," men and women can work in the positions. A busboy is responsible for a variety of duties, ranging from clearing tables to mopping floors.
Clearing and Cleaning Tables
Busboys are responsible for clearing used plates, glasses and silverware from the tables. After clearing the tables, busboys use soapy water and a cloth to clean them for the next customers.
Assisting Servers
Another busboy responsibility is to help servers. This might include bringing bread rolls to the table, carrying other types of food or fetching extra silverware for customers.
Mopping and Cleaning
In some restaurants, busboys are required to mop floors and clean any spills that might occur in the dining area and kitchen.
Assisting with Dishwashing
Some busboy job duties might include washing dishes. This depends on the type of restaurant. Larger restaurants might have the extra funds to hire someone to wash dishes.
Room for Advancement
A busboy who seeks higher pay within a restaurant can eventually apply for a server position. Because servers have more contact with customers, they receive more tips. Busboys might also choose to train for cooking positions, which might also offer higher pay.
