Brighten white laundry to make it fresh and clean.
When your white laundry does not seem white or bright enough, examine your clothes-washing technique to determine where you can improve. Several common mistakes can create dingy and dull white laundry. Often by making some simple changes to how you load your washing machine or the temperature of your wash water, you can see big differences in your laundry. Brighten white laundry to restore crisp white color and fresh clean smells to your clothing.
Instructions
1. Place white clothes into the washing machine, taking care not to load the washing machine more than half-full. Set the water temperature to the hottest temperature that is appropriate for the garments (hot water is most effective) and add the correct amount of laundry detergent. Add 1/2 cup borax to the washing machine also.
2. Add 3/4 cup chlorine bleach to a bleach dispenser if your washing machine has one. If your washing machine lacks a bleach dispenser, dilute the bleach in 1 quart of warm water and add the diluted bleach to the washing machine approximately five minutes after you start the machine.
3. Monitor the wash cycle and when the cycle enters the final rinse, add 1/2 cup baking soda to the washing machine. If you have a front-loading washing machine and cannot open the washing machine mid-cycle, skip this step or add the baking soda in the beginning of the wash cycle when you add the borax.
4. Remove the garments from the washing machine when the wash load finishes. Hang the clothing on a clothesline out in the sun, if possible. Sunlight is a natural whitener and brightener. If you cannot hang your clothes out in the sun, dry them in the dryer.
