When you open your dishwasher, you want to see sparkling clean dishes. If, instead, the first thing you notice is a foul odor, then you could have a plumbing problem.
Problems
Problems that can cause your dishwasher to smell include a clogged filter in your dishwasher, which can lead to food buildup and bacteria growth. Backed-up pipes in your kitchen or a clog in sewer pipes can also release foul odors into your pipe system, which are released when you open your dishwasher.
Causes
Some dishwashers need to have their filters cleaned regularly. If you do not maintain the filter, or if you place dishes with food still on them in the dishwasher, it can cause the filter to clog. Putting oil or large food items down your kitchen sink can also cause your pipes to become blocked.
Solutions
Remove the filter in your dishwasher, and wipe away the food that has clogged it. Then wash the filter in a solution of 1 part water to 1 part white vinegar to improve the filter's smell before replacing it. For clogged pipes, you should contact a plumbing professional to determine if the issue is in the kitchen or the sewer lines.
